Oil and GasCommodity traders are responsible for oil prices by bidding on oil futures contracts. These contracts are basically agreements to buy or sell oil at a specific date in the future for an agreed-upon price.

These futures contracts are executed on the floor of a commodity exchange by traders who are registered with the Commodities Futures Trading Commission. Commodities have been traded for more than 100 years, and have been regulated by the CFTC since the 1920s but that has changed in Oil and Gas trading with manipulative factors driving the price change.

Nigerian economy is Oil and Gas based and the dwindling oil price at international market will certainly affect every economic activity in Nigeria since our economic foundation is deeply fixed on the price of Oil and Gas. This could be the main reason the presidency is yet to present drafted budget for the year 2015 to the legislature for consideration and approval. It is a fortunate period for Nigeria at the time of oil price crisis, her minister of Petroleum, Mrs. Deziani Alison Madueke was appointed OPEC president. This will enhance Nigeria’s stake and protect her interest which will in extension save her economy from total collapse.

Some keen followers of the crude price at international market observed that unusual external factors have supplanted other internal factors driving crude price putting OPEC at grip or lose situation of the price control. They identified these factors as discovery and increase in Shale oil production, international diplomatic row between the East and West and increase in oil theft around the world especially in Nigeria which often time cause oil glut in the market. None of these factors affects oil price as much as the row between the east and west. It is believed that the west artfully and disingenuously manipulated oil prices to punish Russia for their overbearing influence in the internal affairs of Ukraine. Well that is an unprovable postulation but if one were to go by it, the slid in oil price will continue for a longer period of time except something drastic is done to reverse it.

Doing something to counter this infiltrating interest of the west in crude price determination is where OPEC comes in. OPEC that has the responsibility of countering any external influence in oil price is engulfed in great tumult stoked by two Mideast factions of Saudi Arabia and Iran. Iran favours reduction in crude production by OPEC members to help increase the price but Saudi Arabia disfavours the option and proposes that status quo be maintained. Many believe that Saudi Arabia wants sustenance of present level of oil production among OPEC member to deny Iran the fund to pursue their nuclear ambition. Iran, a close ally of Russian federation has considerable influence in OPEC but definitely not a match to the west backed Saudi Arabia in that direction.

In the middle of all the storm is Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke the new OPEC president. She is expected to resolve the oil price hassle in the interest of majority of OPEC members. To do this, she has interest to dislodge, toes to step on, order to restore and upon all, Nigeria’s interest to protect. Having Mrs. Madueke as the president of OPEC is not enough for Nigeria’s economic redemption but economic diversification holds the magic wand. Diversification of Nigeria’s economy will put it in a better shape, position and angle to avoid future infiltrating strangulation from other nations or being punished alongside others. Nigeria has no business depending on oil, fretting at the fall in oil prices or being bullied into unfavourable cooperation by any other nation on earth. Its high time Nigerian government started diversification of nation’s economy, building a thriving society that can hold her own in the comity of nations and projecting a healthy image.

Economic diversification is vital to countries' long-term economic growth, but many resource-rich countries remain heavily reliant on revenues generated by oil production or mining, jeopardizing their chances for sustainable growth. Too often, countries lack clear policy guidelines on how to diversify, and policymakers have limited understanding of why diversification is important. Diversification is driven by human capital development which is the starting point, driving force and sustaining force. Nigeria can take a cue from the Malaysian story which highlights the fact that good diversification policy requires a long-term perspective, with a concerted and sustained effort to channel the resources and funds that can build effective institutions. Countries like Bolivia, Botswana, Kazakhstan seem to be trapped in the same intermission of diversification like Nigeria where lip service starts and ends the project. As the price of oil in the international market is falling like lightning in the sky, that time has come for countries depending on oil to diversify or face great economic quake that has the potential to threaten their political stability.

Addax Lauds Kaztec’s Technical Competence

Published in In The News

Installation of BC-2 Booster CompressorOn July 12, 2014, Kaztec Engineering Limited, a leading 100% indigenous EPCIC-M provider in the Nigerian Oil & Gas landscape, announced the completion of the Ebugu BC-2 Booster Compressor installation in the  OML 123 offshore field.

Kaztec’s Commercial Director Mr. Marc Robillard, at a high-level meeting at the Addax headquarters in Geneva Switzerland, confirmed the announcement. Speaking during the visit, Mr. Robillard said, “This is another significant milestone for Kaztec Engineering. It demonstrates without a doubt our technical capability to deliver expertly on any engineering project.” “You may recall that two months ago, after a complex fabrication process, involving highly skilled engineers and fabricators, Kaztec commenced the load of Addax Petroleum Development Nigeria Limited’s (APDNL) Ebugu Booster Compressor BC-2, onto Kaztec’s pipelay derrick barge, the Ekulo Cheyenne.

“The successful installation of the BC-2 Compressor at OML 123 increased the output and productivity of the Ebugu wells," Mr. Robillard said. APDNL Managing Director, Cornelis Zegelaar confirmed that the Ebugu BC-2 Compressor installation efficiently allows for the reinjection of gas into the reservoir. In doing so, he says, sufficient gas lift will then be available for underpinning production sustainability within the OML 123 Field. In responding to the question of expected capacity of the field, he said, “It is expected that this increase will be in the region of 6000 barrels of oil per day.

During the auspicious meeting, the CEO of Addax Petroleum, Mr. Xinmin Wu, echoed similar sentiments when he said; “Kaztec Engineering Limited has proven over the years that it is capable of handling projects successfully in Nigeria. I want to continue working with Kaztec to see a sustainable growth pattern.”

“I can only echo what the CEO said. We enjoy the relationship that Addax/Kaztec has, and we are pleased with the mutual respect and seamless integration," Mr. Zegelaar said. Addressing the audience, the Chairman of Kaztec, Sir Emeka Offor stated, “Our relationship with Addax has progressed very well; the integration has benefitted us as well as you. We see each other as a family.”

The Group Managing Director NNPC, Engr Andrew Yakubu, at the Snake Island Fabrication Yard, Lagos

The Group Managing Director (GMD) of NNPC Engr. Andrew Yakubu along with the Group General Manager (GGM) NAPIMS Engr. Jonathan Okhehs, the GED Exploration and Production Dr. Joseph Dahwa paid a working visit at KAZTEC Engineering Limited fabrication yard on Snake Island Lagos yesterday. The Executive Vice Chairman of Chrome Group, who is the Chairman of KAZTEC, Sir Emeka Offor, accompanied them. In Sir Emeka’s company were Senator Ken Nnamani, Former Defense Minister of Nigeria Prince Adetokunbo Kayode (SAN) and many other important personalities and friends of Sir Emeka. ADDAX Petroleum MD, Mr. Cornelius Zegelaar, was also in the company of the visitors.

The impressive convergence of the nations leading oil and gas Chiefs was prompted by a scheduled highly technical activities on KAZTEC’s Snake Island fabrication yard, which began on Sunday, May 18th -a process involving a load out for ADDAX Petroleum of its EBUGU BOOSTER COMPRESSOR BC-2.

The event is a major milestone for KAZTEC and it is planned to last over several days, Marc Robillard, KAZTEC’s Commercial Director said. He further said that to execute this chain of events, KAZTEC would be deploying one of its growing lists of offshore assets; particularly the pipe lay Derrick Barge nicknamed EKULO Cheyenne presently docked at the quay side. Overall dimensions of Cheyenne are 350ft in length, 100ft width and 25ft depth. The Barge, he explains is equipped with an 800-ton Manitowoc Sea crane and a 250-ton Crawler Crane on its working deck, which are critical for a successful load out maneuver.

The activities will involve the moving of a locally fabricated 90 feet pile with a diameter of 42 inches and a 1 & ½ inch thickness, he said. The pile will serve as part of the Tripod base onto which the BC-2 Compressor platform will be mounted. Additional steps include the moving of its locally fabricated integrated platform from fabrication workshops to quayside, lifting of platform onto EKULO Cheyenne, sea fastening of platform and transportation to OML 123 field, Mr. Robillard continued. In terms of the general impression on the scope of the project, Terry Glasspowl, the expert fabricator at the fabrication yard said, “Absolutely shocking”, referring to the fact that all the fabrication was carried out locally, some on Snake Island and others on a leased yard in Apapa. The GED for NNPC Exploration and Production Dr. Joseph Dahwa also called it in his own words as “shockingly impressive”. He said it is admirable to see this level of skill sets exemplified by KAZTEC Engineering Limited in Nigeria.

The GMD of NNPC, Engr. Andrew Yakubu while answering questions on his observations at KAZTEC fabrication yard, he said, “This is quite an interesting investment done by KAZTEC, and Addax alliance to boost the transformation agenda of the president as regard the oil and gas sector. This is quite a worthy investment as you can see we are talking about ANTAN brown field trade integrated with this green field investment.

We are talking of complete building of a platform... we have seen this wonderful investment success to reclaim this part of the land, which by this time last year was swamp. There is no doubt that the transformation agenda in the oil and gas sector of Mr. President is yielding significant foot as we have seen. This is a bold step by KAZTEC and we are calling on prospective stakeholders and players in this field to have faith in our economy and then invest in this regard so that we can boost the oil and gas production and exploration in the country.”

“I am impressed and this is about the biggest thing I have seen so far with so many integrated facilities and I have seen the Booster Compressor been put together here and ready to go fast. An investment in this nature to be put together in one year is very impressive. I’m told that about 534 hectares has been acquired and we could see while coming and we have got a huge land potential that can be harnessed with the key facilities that would be used to fabricate, load out and utilize these assets in upgrading and building the oil and gas sector.”

Symbolically for KAZTEC, Mr. Robillard said, “it represents the first major milestone from Snake Island for KAZTEC’s technical competence as well as an affirmation of its expertise as a provider of EPCIC-M – a “Full Turnkey Project Delivery” in Nigeria. When asked about the benefit of the load out in the overall scope of KAZTEC/ADDAX Petroleum business relationship, the Senior Vice President/Managing Director, Addax Petroleum, Mr. Cornelius Zegeelar summarized that it allows for a reinjection of gas into the reservoir. In doing so, he says, sufficient gas lift will then be available to underpin production sustainability within the OML 123 Field. In responding to the question of expected capacity of the field after the load out and installation of BC-2 Compressor, he said, “It is expected that this increase will be in the region of 6000Bbls oil per day.
